Local EmploymentThe Airport seeks to ensure that at least 70% of the jobs at the Airport (including its own employees) are filled by residents in the local labour catchment area as defined in its 2009 Section 106 Planning Agreement (Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Lewisham, Southwark, Barking and Dagenham, Greenwich, Bexley, Havering and Epping Forest) including at least 35% filled by residents of Newham. It also seeks to encourage employers at the Airport to fill their job vacancies with Newham residents and it provides the LBN with a list of those employers so that the Council can do likewise. In 2008, the Airport has set up the LCA Employers’ Forum for all employers operating on-site and holds meetings of that forum at least twice in each calendar year. So far as it can it will ensure all such employers recruit locally and advertise job vacancies through the Airport's website and local Recruitment Centres. Each year the Airport collects data as to where employees live. This data is collected from the postcode information provided by employees when applying for an airport pass. A report is then compiled including details of the percentage of people living in the local labour catchment area and in particular those living in Newham. This is then given to the London Borough of Newham and to the Consultative Committee. The Airport has agreed that these reports should continue to be prepared and that they should be given to the Council and the Committee in July each year. The Consultative Committee was briefed on the Employment Statistics for 2009 at its meeting on 13th July 2010. The slides used in the briefing have been posted to our Presentations page. Community ProjectsThe Airport encourages its staff and others working at the Airport and their staff to participate in local community projects and initiatives. The Airport has agreed that this will continue to be a firm and clear part of its employment policy Work ExperienceThe Airport has for many years arranged work experience programmes for local you people. It has now agreed, by July 2010, to implement a programme providing one week of work experience for a minimum of 40 residents of the Newham and for a minimum eight residents of Bexley, Barking & Dagenham, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. The Airport will report on the scheme annually on 1 July. RecruitmentRecruitment for London City Airport is handled by Reed Employment. For employment opportunities and further information visit the Airport's Recuitment Page The various companies operating at the Airport have individual employment policies. However, the Airport positively encourages employers to fill their job vacancies with local residents Airport Careers PackThe Airport's Careers Pack, which is distributed to local schools and job brokerages, provides a wealth of help, advice and information for those interested in taking up a career at the Airport. The pack was updated and re-issued in July 2007 - see Airport press release - and copies can be downloaded from the airport's website - click the link above. Employee Development
The Airport is committed to investing in its staff through a wide range of learning and development activities. Training is provided both for job specific skills and in the general competencies which provide employees with the ability to do their jobs and develop key transferable skills. The general competencies programme is based on the key ‘soft skills' required for the long term success of the business including training in:
Education and TrainingTHE Airport has for many years worked in partnership with the Newham Council and schools and colleges in support of educational projects, notably in enhancing basic skills - for full details visit the Airport's website The Airport has now agreed to provide £720,000 in six (index linked) annual payments of £120,000 to finance education, training or employment objectives as agreed at a meeting each year with Newham Council three months before the payments are made on 1st July. The money will be spent partly by the Airport and partly by the Council. The Airport will spend its share on programmes for primary and secondary schools in Newham south of the A13 and in one primary and one secondary school in Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. There will also be a five year university prize scheme with awards of £2,000 per student per year for three years to eight residents of Newham and two residents drawn from Greenwich and/or Tower Hamlets, i.e. a maximum of 10 residents per year and a maximum of 50 residents over the five year duration of the scheme. Each recipient of an award must be entering university for the first time and be studying a subject relevant to the business of the Airport. The Airport will also offer a City interview programme offered at least seven times per year to residents of Newham who are either young people not in education, employment or training or otherwise unemployed. The Council will use its share to fund a five year programme to reinforce basic employment skills amongst the adult population of Newham. Annual Performance ReportThe Report for 2009 and its Appendices was posted to this website on 30th July 2010. The Chapter dealing with Education, Employment and Training is on page 20. |
