IntroductionTbe opening of the Airport Extension of the Docklands Light Railway in December 2005 will certainly have had an impact on how Airport staff travel to work. Time must be allowed for staff travel patterns to settle down before the effect of the railway can be fully assessed but it will be helpful to any such assessment to compare the latest travel to work patterns with those which obtained before the railway was opened. These were studied at some length in a Staff Travel Survey carried out in 2001 and updated in 2003 - on this page we explain the results of these Surveys in some detail. Notes on 2001 SurveyThe Questionnaire ** was sent out with a covering letter to 758 people working at the Airport. This represents about 47% of the total workforce. There were 224 respondents giving a response rate of 30%. The Questionnaire, which was piloted in 2000, was shown to the Airport Transport Forum at its meeting in December that year. Amendments suggested by members were incorporated prior to this survey. It was the original intention to send a questionnaire to the home address of all employees as recorded in the database for security passes. But this was ruled out by the requirements of Data Protection Act and it was necessary to rely for distribution on the cooperation of Airport employers. The Airport is working on how best to deal with this problem next time. The are more than 1,600 employees now working at the airport, employed by more than 44 different organizations. In addition there are about 400 off site jobs (i.e. taxi drivers, bus drivers, caterers etc). In total the airport generates over 2000 direct employment opportunities. Over the next decade the airport is expected to grow to 3.5. million passengers per year and it is estimated that the number of employment opportunities will increase to 2,700 on-site jobs, which with a further 600 off-site, indirect or induced employment will result in 3,300 jobs generated directly by the airport.
