The Airport and the Regeneration of London DocklandsLONDON City Airport has been, and remains, a key player in the regeneration of London's Docklands. It was a flagship project for the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC), the government agency which took the lead in managing the regeneration of the area between July 1981 and March 1998. But the regeneration story started earlier and in the Royal Docks it continues still, but under new management. The Regeneration StoryHERE are links to articles which together give an outline of the regeneration story. One of the articles is on our History page where you will find more articles about the history of the Airport and its part in the regeneration story. The other articles are on the LDDC History Pages and the web site of the Royal Docks Trust (London) which together provide masses of information about the Docklands story and links to other helpful sites.
There is also some useful information about West Silvertown, and many photographs, on the website of the West Silvertown Village Community Foundation Airport SafeguardingALTHOUGH the Airport is a great economic generator, and a key transport facility in the regeneration of the Docklands and the East Thames Corridor, it can sometimes affect development around it. There is, for example, control of the height of buildings to ensure that the airspace used by aircraft in the air is sufficiently free of obstacles to ensure their safety. An early example of this concerned the plans for first tower at Canary Wharf which had to be revised to reduce the height of the tower by more than 60 feet before they could be approved.
